THE SEVEN RILA LAKES & RILA MONASTERY

0

An intensive hiking & sightseeing programme, which shows you the best of the nature and culture merits of the Rila Mountains: Rila Monastery (UNESCO) and the Cirque of The Seven Rila Lakes. The program doesn’t allow much free time on either site but it is quite enough to explore both places.

The tour begins with an early transfer to the Rila (appr. 1,45hrs), followed by a brief 20-min. cable car ride to the Seven Rila Lakes Cirque. The glacier lakes are at between 2100 and 2500m above sea level, with name fitting their shapes, like Babreka (the Kidney), Okoto (the Eye), Salzata (the Teardrop), Trilistnika (the Trefoil), Bliznaka (the Twin) etc. As we need to follow strict time schedule, depending on your fitness, we can either make the whole circuit around all lakes, or make the stroll shorter and skip the two highest ones. After the hiking around one of the Rila’s most remarkable and beautiful parts, we are transferred to the Rila Monastery: the largest and most significant Bulgarian Orthodox Church establishment (1,30hrs drive). The 20m high walls shelter impressive cloisters, a church, and a chapel with unique murals and museum collections. We return to Sofia in late afternoon/evening.

Total transfer time: Appr. 5-5,30hrs (+40min chairlift ride)
Hiking specifics: Appr. 3,30hrs (without breaks); 6km; +400m/-400m;
Tour difficulty: the trek is considered as moderately arduous with some steep stages now and then. The terrain is rough so flip-flops and sandals are not acceptable. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Wind-/waterproofs are necessary just in case (general rule for all treks above the tree line irrespective of the season) and also a warmer middle layer (especially for the chairlift ride in the chilly mornings).

This was a wonderful day out. The hike to the Rila Lakes was very refreshing and rewarding (although a bit strenuous). The tour guide and driver Todor was very helpful all through the day and was very kind and considerate to all the participants.
He did an excellent job also providing some explanation about the monastery later in the day once on the premises of the Monastery.
I strongly recommend this tour – a great value for money!!!

The email response from Traventuria was prompt and information regarding the tour was detailed. Had a wonderful full day trip (Rila Lakes and Rila Monasteries) with Traventuria. The guide is very knowledge and wasn’t hesitate in helping in paying the toilet fees when some of the tour mates doesnt have any bulgaria Leva. He also looked out for everyone (as everyone have different hiking pace) and ensured everyone’s safety when doing hiking up to the peak. We managed to see the lakes after a few hours of hiking up to the peak! Would highly recommend Traventuria to those who wants to do day trips!

Amazing day on the Rila Lakes & Monastery tour with our excellent guide Petar. The tour itself includes a 4 hour hike to see all the lakes, followed by an hour at the monastery. Petar was a fantastic guide, encouraging & supportive when the climb got tough & with a great sense of humour throughout. I would recommend this tour for anyone who wants to see more of Bulgaria but has limited time – the best of both worlds.

We booked a Seven Rila Lakes and Rila Monastery tour using the company web side. Our guide Radi met us near our hotel, as agreed, on time. The group was small, 5 people including us. After 1.5 hour drive from Sofia, we started with chair lift that brought us to the hike start point. The hike divided onto two part – the first one is hiking along Rila lakes, and the second is challenging climb – but the view from the top really worths it. 4.5 hours round trip ended near chairlift that took us back to the car. After the one-hour drive, we arrived to the Rila Monastery that was very spectacular – the ancient monastery in the middle of the forest. A must for this trip – appropriate shoes, snack, drinking water. Thanks Traventuria , thank you Radi .
